1. Description of functions, responsibilities and obligations

The lawyer reports directly to the Registrar of the Court.

The main objective of the position is to do legal work for the Registry of the Court. The lawyer will carry out research, prepare studies and draft resolutions for contentious cases, advisory opinions and provisional measures, assigned to him/her by the Registrar.


Specific Duties:
  1. Coordinate and process contentious cases, provisional measures and requests for advisory opinions.
  2. Draft resolutions and specific legal studies for contentious cases, provisional measures and advisory opinions.
  3. Keep track of the cases under his/her charge.
  4. Draft letters, resolutions or other decisions for the Registry, the President of the Court or the Court.
  5. Prepare summaries of cases, provisional measures and advisory opinions and submit those timely to be used as working documents for the Registrar and the Judges.
  6. Work on the drafts of judgements and resolutions for the study of the judges and the Registry within the deadlines established by them and following their instructions and criteria.
  7. Prepare documents for public hearings and coordinate their development.
  8. Review and edit the Judgments and Resolutions of the Court and or the President once deliberated and adopted and before notification.
  9. Prepare case-law and doctrine studies on issues related to resolutions and judgments issued by the Court, as well as collaborate with the preparation of general studies on human rights.
  10. Provide the necessary legal support required by Judges, the Registrar or by whoever the Registrar assigns such responsibility.
  11. Attend meetings of the Legal Department and other group meetings at the Registrar´s will.
  12. Review the updating and publishing of judicial files.
  13. Give lectures, talks and conferences to professionals, students or the public, inside or outside the Court´s headquarters, by appointment of the Secretary.
  14. When required, or so decided by the Registrar, travel to other countries to work in the special sessions of the Court.
  15. Provide the information required for the draft of press releases, speeches by the President or other official documents.
  16. Perform every other duty assigned to him/her by the Registrar of the Court or whoever he designates.

2. Requirements

2.1. Education and Experience

Essencial:

Qualified lawyer from a Member State of the OAS. University Law Degree issued by a duly accredited institution and, at least, 5 years of relevant experience.

Submit Cover Letter, detailed Curriculum Vitae, work experience and salary history and two letters of recommendation. Copies of the Degrees, duly authenticated, will be requested from the selected candidates. Application deadline is August 16, 2019.

The applicant must have knowledge of international law, international human rights law and humanitarian law; in addition, knowledge of the Court´s work and its jurisprudence and of the inter-American system of the protection of human rights, including its purposes, functions, organs and procedures. She/he must understand the purpose and functioning of other international human rights protection bodies. He/she must possess elements of the judgment, ability and experience necessary to carry out team work.

 

2.2. Languages

Essencial - Fluency in Spanish and English language (reading, writing and talking).
Desirable - Knowledge of French and / or Portuguese.

 

2.3. Knowledge of Information Technologies (IT)

Ability to work effectively with Microsoft Office (eg Outlook, Word and Excel), as well as diverse applications and other software applicable to the area of work for specialized investigations, such as databases and social networks.

 

3. Personal Skills

Service-orientation, ability to share knowledge, teamwork, interpersonal skills and to be proactive to solve problems. Ability to communicate clearly in the languages required for the position.

There will be a preselection of the candidates. Only those preselected candidates will be contacted for a written examination. Only those candidates who pass the written examination will go through a personal interview.
