This thesaurus has been constructed as an instrument to facilitate the use of information technologies, to aid in the management of knowledge on human rights and for greater communication and integration between users and the Library of the Court and the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights.

This thesaurus has been designed not only as a guide for building the database, but as a helpful conceptual reference to guide and facilitate the selection, retrieval, analysis, indexing and dissemination of human rights documentation.

This thesaurus consolidates meanings of terms used in different databases and other specialized thesauri. Thus the thesaurus helps prioritize a wide variety of existing terminology in the region and represents the relationships.

The definition of the facets and the selection of terms included in each, allows a consistency and coherence when searching, while decreasing the percentage of errors when processing and indexing documents, facilitating the identification of equivalent linguistics and the convergence with other controlled vocabulary.
