The I/A Court H.R. has elected the new Presidency: Judge Nancy Hernández López from Costa Rica as President, and Judge Rodrigo Mudrovitsch from Brazil as Vice-President.

Inter-American Court of Human Rights held an Extraordinary Session

On December 12, 2023, the Inter-American Court held an Extraordinary Session in which it began deliberating the Judgment in the Case of Members and Militants of the Patriotic Union v. Colombia, and it also adopted two orders on Provisional Measures: Matter of Members of the Yanomami, Ye’Kwana and Munduruku Indigenous Peoples regarding Brazil and Matter of Members of the Choréachi Indigenous Community regarding Mexico.

Closing of the III Latin American Human Rights Seedbed

The closing ceremony of the III Latin American Human Rights Seedbed was held on December 1st, with the participation of Hartmut Rank, Program Director of the Rule of Law Program of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS); Pablo Saavedra Alessandri, Secretary of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, and Martín Sigal, Director of the Human Rights Center of the University of Buenos Aires. During this session awards were given to the best projects and diplomas were given to the graduates, who come from all countries in Latin America.
 
Training on Artificial Intelligence and the Rule of Law

On November 15, at the seat of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, Judges of the Supreme Court of Justice and Judicial Schools in Latin America and the Caribbean received training on “Artificial Intelligence and the Rule of Law” based on UNESCO’s global toolkit on AI and the rule of law for the judiciary.

Incorporation into the Ibero-American Network of Judicial Schools

On Friday November 12, the Inter-American Court’s Education Center became part of the Ibero-American Network of Judicial Schools. The decision was unanimously adopted by the participating Judicial Schools at the XII General Assembly, held in León, Spain.
 
 
Completion of the Course “The Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the Public Prosecutor’s Office”

The course “The Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the Public Prosecutor’s Office” ended on November 1st. It was organized by the Court's Education Center and the Argentinian Association of Prosecutors (AAF).

More than 400 prosecutors and members of the Public Prosecutor’s Office from 13 States in the region participated in the course, which covered topics such as:

Application of International Human Rights Law to the different areas of work of prosecutors.

Measures of protection of the Inter-American System for members of the Prosecutor’s Offices.

Jurisprudence of the Court regarding the Public Prosecutor’s Office and its independence.

Inaugural Panel of the International Course “Compliance with Judgments of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and Public Policies for their implementation”

The first international course “Compliance with Judgments of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and Public Policies for their implementation” began on Monday November 27, organized by the I/A Court H.R. and the Mercosur Institute of Public Policies (IPPDH).

The course provided training to 80 participants from several countries in the region on the different types of reparation ordered by the Court in its Judgments and the potential impact of the design and implementation of public policies with a human rights perspective in the implementation of reparation measures.

Visit to the Costa Rican Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Judge Nancy Hernández, President elect of the I/A Court H.R., visited the Costa Rican Ministry of Foreign Affairs on December 19, where she was received by the Minister Arnoldo André Tinoco. During the meeting, the President elect spoke about the important challenges faced by the region and the decisive impact of the Inter-American System and its mechanism.

Visit to Mexico by Judge Nancy Hernández for the First Report of Activities of Minister Norma Piña Hernández

On December 17, the President elect of the I/A Court H.R., Judge Nancy Hernández López, visited Mexico for the presentation of the First Report of Activities of Minister Norma Piña Hernández, President of the Supreme Court of Justice of Mexico (SCJN) and the Federal Judiciary Council. During her stay, she exchanged ideas with the Judges of the SCJN and explored the Building of Justicia TV.

On November 22, during the 163rd Regular Session, the Judges of the Inter-American Court met with the Board of Directors of the Inter-American Association of Public Defenders and representatives of the Public Defender’s Offices in the region.
 
 
Presentation of the book “The Impact of the Jurisprudence of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights from the Public Defenders’ perspective”

The presentation of the book “The Impact of the Jurisprudence of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights from the Public Defenders’ perspective” was held on November 21st at the seat of the Court. General Defender Stella Maris and the Director, Juan Carlos Pérez, participated on behalf of the Inter-American Association of Public Defenders, while the President Judge Ricardo C. Pérez and Judge Patricia Goldberg participated on behalf of the I/A Court H.R.

Seminar: “Institutional Violence in Prisons: Reflections for an effective solution”

On December 12, Judge Patricia Goldberg participated in panel 1 of the Seminar: “Institutional violence in prisons: Reflections for an effective solution” organized by the Public Defender’s Office of Chile.

During this panel, the Judge of the I/A Court H.R. shared perspectives to address the institutional violence that occurs in prisons. Among other comments, Judge Pérez highlighted the importance of providing continuous training for the personnel who work with this population in order to prevent institutional violence.

Collaboration activities with the Max Planck Institute and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation

As part of the collaboration activities, the I/A Court H.R., the Max Planck Institute and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation jointly organized two seminars and one discussion, which were held from December 4 to 8, 2023.

These activities covered various topics related to the impact of decisions on human rights, Monitoring Compliance with Judgments and the strengthening of democracy. They were held in Heidelberg, Germany, at the Max Planck Institute of Comparative Public Law and International Law.

The Court’s President, Judge Ricardo C. Pérez Manrique; the Registrar, Pablo Saavedra Alessandri and the Director of Monitoring Compliance with Judgment, Gabriela Pacheco Arias attended on behalf of the I/A Court H.R.

As part of the joint work with the Max Planck Institute, a memorandum of understanding was signed by the Court and the Institute. In addition, the new series of journals on “Compliance and Impact” were presented, to disseminate the Court's jurisprudence on Monitoring Compliance with Judgment.
