JUDGMENTS
Venezuela is responsible for the extrajudicial execution of two people based on age discrimination and socioeconomic status In the Judgment of the Case of Guerrero, Molina et al. v. Venezuela, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights found the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela responsible for the death of Jimmy Rafael Guerrero Meléndez, who was extrajudicially executed by police officers due to discrimination based on age and socioeconomic status; as well as for the murder of his relative, Ramón Antonio Molina Pérez.
Peru was found responsible for violations within framework of a process to ratify a Judicial Clerk’s position, ending in her dismissal In the Judgment of the Case of Moya Solís v. Peru, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights found the State of Peru responsible for the violation of Judicial Guarantees (Article 8), the principle of legality (Article 9), the right to participate in government (Article 23), and the right to Judicial Protection (Article 25), set forth in the American Convention on Human Rights, to the detriment of Norka Moya Solís.
Ecuador is responsible for the arbitrary dismissal of a member of its armed forces who denounced human rights violations In the Judgment of the Case of Grijalva Bueno v. Ecuador, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights found the State of Ecuador was responsible for the violation of Judicial Guarantees (Articles 8(1), 8(2), 8(2)(b), 8(2)(c) and 8(2)(f)), freedom of expression (Article 13(1)) and Judicial Protection (Article 25(1) and 25(2)(c)), established in the American Convention on Human Rights, to the detriment of Vicente Aníbal Grijalva Bueno, who was improperly dismissed from the Ecuadorian Navy in 1993, after he reported the involvement of military personnel in acts of torture and forced disappearances. The State made a partial acknowledgement of international responsibility due to the violations that occurred in the context of the dismissal procedure and the failure to execute the Judgment of the Court of Constitutional Guarantees.
Ecuador is responsible for writer’s forced disappearance In the Judgment of the Case of Garzón Guzmán et al. v. Ecuador, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights found the State of Ecuador responsible for the forced disappearance of Mr. César Gustavo Garzón Guzmán and for the violation of his rights to recognition as a person before the law, life, integrity, personal freedom, judicial guarantees and protection. In addition, it declared the State responsible for the violation of the rights to judicial guarantees and protection, and personal integrity of Mr. Garzón Guzmán’s family members. The State acknowledged its international responsibility in the case.
Paraguay is internationally responsible for violating judicial independence after the arbitrary dismissal of two Supreme Court judges in 2003
In the Judgment of the Case of Ríos Avalos et al. v. Paraguay, notified today, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights declared the Republic of Paraguay internationally responsible for violating the rights to Judicial Guarantees, (Article 8(1) of the American Convention on Human Rights-, and Judicial Protection, -Article 25(1)(c)), to the detriment of Bonifacio Ríos Avalos and Carlos Fernández Gadea, as a result of their dismissal from positions as judges of the Supreme Court, within the framework of their impeachment trial by the Legislature in 2003.
Inter-American Court issues Judgment and assesses the Friendly Settlement Agreement in the Case of the Miskito Divers v. Honduras
In the Judgment of the Case of the Miskito Divers (Lemoth Morris et al.) v. Honduras, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights approved and granted full legal effects to the Friendly Settlement Agreement reached by the State and the representatives of the victims of the case. The Court assessed positively the Agreement reached between the parties.
Colombia is responsible for the kidnapping and torture of the journalist Jineth Bedoya Lima
NIn the Judgment of the Case of Bedoya Lima et al. v. Colombia, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights found the State of Colombia internationally responsible for the violation of the rights to personal integrity, personal liberty, honor, dignity, and freedom of expression of journalist Jineth Bedoya Lima. During the events on May 25, 2000, when Ms. Bedoya was intercepted and kidnapped outside the La Modelo Prison by members of a paramilitary group and subjected to extremely violent and humiliating treatment, she suffered severe verbal, physical and sexual assault. The Court noted the existence of "serious, precise and congruent indications" of the State's participation in said events.

Advisory Opinion on a gender perspective on the rights to freedom to organize, collective bargaining and strike, and their relation to other rights
On May 5, 2021, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights issued an Advisory Opinion on a gender perspective on the rights to freedom to organize, collective bargaining, and strike, and their relation to other rights. The request for this Advisory Opinion was submitted by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.
Unlimited presidential reelection violates the Convention and the American Declaration
On June 7, 2021, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights issued an Advisory Opinion in response to the question submitted by the Republic of Colombia on “unlimited presidential re-election in the context of the Inter-American Human Rights System.”

Inter-American Court of Human Rights launched its third edition of the Diploma Refresher Course on its Case Law, in Guatemala ![]() On July 7, the Secretary of the Inter-American Court Human Right, Pablo Saavedra Alessandri, the acting President of the Court of Constitutionality of Guatemala, Magistrate Dina Josefina Ochoa Escribá and the Director of the Constitutional Justice Institute, Rita Florencia Moguel Luna, launched the third edition of the Diploma Refresher Course on the Case Law of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.

The event was attended by the President of the Court, Judge Elizabeth Odio Benito, who through virtual media highlighted the importance of implementing jurisprudential standards on the rights of indigenous and tribal peoples through review of compliance with the Convention. Councilor Dr. Luis Alonso Ramírez Menéndez also shared a few words with the participants on behalf of the National Council of the Judiciary (Consejo Nacional de la Judicatura or CNJ).

THIRD EDITION OF THE DIPLOMA IN HUMAN RIGHTS FOR JOURNALISTS

Sixty journalists from different countries of Latin America and the Caribbean launched the III Edition of the Diploma in Human Rights for Journalists. In the Diploma, participants delve more deeply into the functioning of the Inter-American Human Rights System. The course is supported by UNESCO, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation’s Rule of Law Program for Latin America and the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights.
