  • Inter-American Court of Human Rights will hold Its 179th Regular Session

    San José, Costa Rica, August 14, 2025. The Inter-American Court of Human Rights will hold its 179th Regular Session from August 18 to September 3, 2025. It will be hybrid, including both virtual and in-person activities. During this session, the Court will hold deliberations and hearings.

  • I/A Court HR hands out the awards to the winners of the contest “Focusing on Rights: A Photographic Journey along with the I/A Court HR”

    San José, Costa Rica, August 14, 2025. On August 12, the award ceremony was held for the winners of the photography contest “Focusing on Rights: a photographic journey along with the I/A Court HR.” The act was led by Judge Nancy Hernández López, President of the Court. The awards ceremony was held at the facilities of the Colegio de Abogados y Abogadas de Costa Rica (Bar Association of Costa Rica).

  • The Inter-American Court of Human Rights recognizes the existence of a stand-alone human right to care

    San José, Costa Rica, August 7, 2025. The Inter-American Court of Human Rights notified today Advisory Opinion 31 of 2025 on the content and scope of care as a human right and its interrelationship with other rights, adopted on June 12, 2025, in response to a request submitted by the Republic of Argentina in January of 2023. This advisory process had the second highest participation in the Court’s history, with a total of 129 observations received, and it was the first in which an international court was asked to address the right to care.

  • Chile complied with the judgment in the Case of Teachers of Chañaral and other Municipalities

    San José, Costa Rica, July 10, 2025. In conformity with that set forth in the Order on Monitoring Compliance with Judgment issued by the Court on July 1, 2025, the Republic of Chile has complied with the execution of all the reparations ordered in the Judgment of November 10, 2021. Therefore, the Inter-American Court decided to conclude and archive the case. For more information, the Judgment of November 10, 2021, can be accessed here and the Order of July 1, 2025, which declares the closing of the case, can be accessed here

  • After the most participative process in its history, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights has established the scope of the obligations of states to protect human rights with regard to the climate emergency

The Inter-American Court of Human Rights notified today Advisory Opinion 32 of 2025 on the Climate Emergency and Human Rights, adopted on May 29, 2025, in response to the request submitted by the Republic of Chile and the Republic of Colombia in January 2023.

  • The Inter-American Court of Human Rights holds its 176th Regular Session

    San José, Costa Rica, June 5, 2025. The Inter-American Court of Human Rights held its 176th regular session from May 19 to 30, 2025, in a hybrid form. During the session, it held hearings and deliberations, and discussed urgent matters. The first week took place with the presence of the judges in Guatemala City, Guatemala, with the activities described previously here, while the second week was conducted virtually.

  • Extension of the deadline for receiving observations on the request for an Advisory Opinion presented by the Republic of Guatemala

On December 6, 2024, the Republic of Guatemala presented a request for an advisory opinion on Democracy and its protection under the inter-American system of human rights to the Secretariat of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, in accordance with Article 64(1) of the American Convention on Human Rights.

  • The Inter-American Court of Human Rights has held a Regular Session in Guatemala

    San José, Costa Rica, May 30, 2025. From May 19 to 23, 2025, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights held the first week of work corresponding to its 176th regular session in Guatemala City. This was possible thanks to an invitation from the Government of the Republic of Guatemala, with the support of the Presidential Commission for Peace and Human Rights (COPADEH), as the local organizing body.

    San José, Costa Rica, mayo 30 de 2025 –El pasado 24 de mayo fue inaugurada la IV Edición del “Semillero Latinoamericano: Acercando a las y los jóvenes a la Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos” (Semillero LATAM), una iniciativa regional conjunta del Centro de Derechos Humanos de la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad de Buenos Aires, el Programa Estado de Derecho para Latinoamérica de la Fundación Konrad Adenauer y el Centro de Formación de la Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos.
